Is Your Solar Inverter Showing Any of These Signs?
Most solar faults in Sri Lanka get blamed on the panels. In practice, the inverter is the component that fails first — it's the only part of your system doing continuous high-voltage switching in tropical heat and humidity. If any of the following sounds familiar, the inverter is the place to start looking.
No output at all
The display is on but generation reads zero, or the unit is completely dead. Usually a failed IGBT stage, blown DC-side fuse, or a tripped internal relay.
Generation has dropped sharply
Our system used to make 20 units a day and now makes 8. One MPPT channel has likely failed, or a string input is dead while the other keeps working.
Error code on the display
Growatt Error 116/117, Solis OV-G-V, Huawei "Insulation Resistance Low", SMA "Riso too low" — every code points somewhere specific. Send us a photo and we'll tell you what it means.
Inverter shuts down in the afternoon
Classic thermal derating. Blocked heatsink, failed cooling fan, or dried thermal paste. The hottest, sunniest part of the day is exactly when you lose the most generation.
Blank or dead display
Often just the LCD/display board or its ribbon connector, not the power stage. Frequently a cheap fix that gets misdiagnosed as a total failure.
Loud humming, buzzing or rattling
Bearing failure in the cooling fan, or a magnetostrictive hum from a stressed transformer or choke. Both are repairable; both get worse if ignored.
Burning smell or discolouration
Stop using the system and call us immediately. This indicates arcing, a failed capacitor, or a burnt terminal block. This is a fire risk, not a performance issue.
Breaker or RCD keeps tripping
Insulation breakdown on the DC side, a failed GFCI/leakage-current sensor, or moisture ingress. Repeated resetting does not solve it.
Monitoring app shows no data
Failed WiFi/GPRS dongle, dead comms board, or corrupted firmware. Your system may be generating fine while you're flying blind on the app.
After a lightning strike or power surge
Sri Lanka's monsoon storms take out surge protection devices and comms boards constantly. Often repairable — but only if the SPDs did their job. Get it assessed before assuming it's a write-off.
Water inside the enclosure
Failed gasket, cracked conduit gland, or an incorrectly mounted unit. Dry-out plus board cleaning and conformal re-coating can save it if you act fast.
Ants, geckos or rodents inside
Extremely common in Sri Lankan installations. Nests bridge terminals and cause shorts and leakage faults. Cleaning, board inspection and sealing is a standard job for us.

On-Grid / Grid-Tie String Inverters
The most common inverter type on Sri Lankan rooftops under CEB and LECO net metering and net accounting schemes. Single-phase 1kW–10kW and three-phase 5kW–100kW+. Typical faults: MPPT channel failure, grid relay failure, DC bus capacitor degradation, anti-islanding and grid-protection faults.
Hybrid Inverters
Inverters running solar, battery and grid together — Deye, Sunsynk, Growatt SPH/SPF, Solis S6, SolaX, Luxpower and similar. These fail differently: BMS communication faults, battery-side MOSFET failure, incorrect charge/discharge behaviour, and firmware-configuration problems that look like hardware faults but aren't.
Off-Grid & Battery Inverters
Standalone and backup systems including Voltronic/Axpert-platform units, MUST, SAKO, Felicity, Victron and TBB. Common issues: overload shutdown, transformer failure, charge-controller faults, and battery-bank mismatch damaging the inverter stage.
Micro Inverters & Power Optimisers
Hoymiles, APsystems, Enphase and equivalent. Per-panel diagnostics, gateway and comms troubleshooting, and unit-level replacement where a module is genuinely unrecoverable.
Three-Phase & Commercial Inverters
